Zuck’s AI empire just entered “digestion mode”

Meta has temporarily paused hiring for its new artificial intelligence division after months of aggressive spending on talent and infrastructure.

The decision, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, comes as the company restructures its AI strategy and consolidates teams.

According to Meta, this isn’t a pullback but part of “basic organisational planning” , setting up a clear structure for its superintelligence efforts and aligning with its annual budgeting process.

As part of the restructure, Meta has split its AI work into four main teams:

  • TBD Lab, focused on building machine superintelligence

  • AI products division

  • Infrastructure division

  • Long-term research and exploration

All four now fall under the “Meta Superintelligence Labs,” highlighting Mark Zuckerberg’s ambition to develop AI systems that go beyond human-level intelligence.

This pause follows a major hiring spree where Meta reportedly offered signing bonuses of up to $100 million to secure top AI researchers.

The company also acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion, bringing founder Alexandr Wang onboard to lead its open-source Llama language model development.

The move has raised questions about whether Meta is slowing its AI push, especially as OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman recently described the industry as being “in a bubble.” However, analysts disagree.

They believe Meta is simply in “digestion mode”, taking time to integrate new hires, evaluate capabilities, and plan the next phase of development.

But they were just about to offer me $100M… right?
