Video conferencing software Zoom quietly updated its user agreement, meaning users’ data can now be harvested to train their secret AI.

The new update, effective from July 27th, establishes Zoom’s right to use some aspects of customer data for training and tuning its AI, or machine-learning models.

The “service-generated data” that Zoom can now use to train its AI includes customer information on product usage, telemetry and diagnostic data and similar content or data collected by the company. It does not provide any way to opt-out of this data collection.

Zoom responded to the backlash by saying: “for AI, we do not use audio, video or chat content for training our models without customer consent.”

But of course, once you’ve accepted the agreement… you’ve consented! So basically yeah, they are using that data.

If you’ve seen any of the crazy buildings made in Midjourney (including in our Image of the Day), you might understand why some architects are panicking that AI is about to take over their profession.

“The problem with architects is that we almost entirely focus on images,” says Neil Leach, author of Architecture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.

“But the most revolutionary change is in the less sexy area: the automation of the entire design package, from developing initial options right through to construction. In terms of strategic thinking and real-time analysis, AI is already way beyond what human architects are capable of.”

Although the images that you can make in text-to-image generators look great, they obviously have taken no consideration of what creating a building actually entails, which is why with Midjourney we can see buildings made of wool, for example.

But that doesn’t mean that AI isn’t capable - with different tools, AI is absolutely capable of considering the materials and mathematical implications of design.

Two new tools - XKool and LookX, are taking China by storm right now. AI-designed buildings might be the future. And well, is that a bad thing? It might enable us to design things we never thought possible. I’m on board with this.
