Zoom isn’t just about video anymore

ZOOM

Zoom Video Communications Inc. has officially changed its name to Zoom Communications Inc. to reflect a new broader focus beyond video conferencing.

CEO Eric Yuan explained that the move aligns with Zoom’s goal to be an "AI-first work platform for human connection," supporting hybrid work environments.

This rebrand marks a shift from Zoom’s pandemic-era success in video meetings to offering a wider range of work tools.

As employees returned to their offices, Zoom faced competition from Google, Microsoft, and Slack, which included video features in their office suites.

Zoom’s revenue, which surged in 2020, dropped by 2022, following a pattern seen with other lockdown favourites like Peloton and Netflix.

Key points to note:

  • Zoom has rebranded to focus on AI-powered tools for hybrid work.

  • Its AI Companion 2.0 helps automate tasks like email and meeting summaries.

  • Zoom Workplace now offers a full suite of productivity tools to compete with Google and Microsoft.

When AI meets the office

Zoom introduced Zoom Workplace to stay competitive, which includes team chat, a business email platform, and productivity apps.

The release of its AI Companion 2.0 in October added advanced tools for summarising and managing tasks, aiming to reduce repetitive work.

Yuan believes these updates will save users time, potentially enabling a four-day workweek.

Zoom’s transformation highlights its efforts to remain competitive as the workplace evolves.

When Zoom goes AI-first, do we still call it Zoom-ing?
