Epic Games is making a big push towards using AI to develop video games, with CEO Tim Sweeney announcing plans to help developers work faster with AI tools.

The Fortnite creator is moving staff towards AI-based development, while Bloomberg reports that its upcoming Disney project featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters has been delayed.

According to the report, developers have been told to stop writing code by hand and use AI to create the game's artwork.

In brief:

  • Sweeney defended the move, saying Epic needs to keep up with AI's growing role in gaming.

  • Epic laid off more than 1,000 employees six months ago, blaming a drop in Fortnite activity rather than AI.

  • Game designer and Fortnite streamer Lisha Howen believes most players will carry on playing despite concerns about AI.

Sweeney says the aim is to help teams make better games faster, rather than cut jobs.

However, the announcement has raised concerns among developers who worry that AI could replace creative workers.
