Niantic is working on a new “Large Geospatial Model” or LGM using millions of scans collected from players of Pokémon Go and other apps.
This AI system is designed to help computers and robots better understand and interact with the real world.
The LGM is based on Niantic’s Visual Positioning System or VPS, which uses images from smartphones to figure out location and direction on a 3D map.
For the last 5 years, players have helped create this data by scanning locations during games.
This data is unique because it shows places from a pedestrian’s view, including areas cars can’t reach.
Here's a breakdown of what LGM is:
It’s a model built from millions of scans by players, helping AI understand the real world.
Uses smartphone images to create 3D maps from a pedestrian’s perspective.
It combines 3D shapes with object recognition, opening new possibilities for AI.
Niantic’s Chief Scientist, Victor Prisacariu, explained in 2022 that this data captures not only the shapes of objects but also what they are — like trees, ground and the sky.
This mix of 3D mapping and object recognition is what powers the LGM.
