What if your outfit could update itself?
Fashion trends change fast, what’s in style today might be old news next month.
Instead of throwing away clothes and adding to the 92 million tons of textile waste each year, MIT and Adobe researchers want to make outfits that adapt and last.
Their new tool, Refashion, lets people design modular clothing, like trousers that turn into dresses or tops that change into jumpsuits.
The software breaks clothing down into digital “building blocks,” so anyone can draw, plan, and visualise pieces that can be reshaped or resized later.
In early tests, both designers and beginners created clothing prototypes in under 30 minutes.
The system’s simple drag-and-drop setup lets users play with different shapes, folds, and fasteners like Velcro or snaps instead of sewing.
TL;DR
Refashion makes redesigns easy, you can reshape or resize clothes instead of buying new ones.
The tool uses modular pieces that connect without traditional sewing.
Next steps include using stronger materials, adding patchwork options, and reducing fabric waste.
One hoodie, five personalities
Once a design is ready, Refashion builds a digital blueprint and shows how it fits on 3D models of various body types.
The goal is to make fashion more sustainable, flexible, and personal, turning creativity into a greener alternative to fast fashion.
