SPOTIFY
What if Spotify could understand why you want Lana Del Rey?
Spotify’s latest earnings call hinted at a more conversational future for the app, with AI playing a key role.
The platform already has an AI DJ that responds to voice commands, but now it's using those voice interactions to learn how people really talk about music.
According to Spotify’s tech lead, this gives them a completely new kind of data, one that links everyday language to songs, moods, and genres.
That could mean you’ll soon be able to chat with Spotify more naturally, not just ask it to “play something chill.”
A few key points:
Spotify is collecting voice data from its AI DJ to improve how it understands users.
The company’s aiming for a more interactive, chat-like experience powered by generative AI.
AI is also being used internally to boost speed and efficiency across teams.
Crying in the club, algorithmically
The goal is for the AI to not only predict what you’ll like but actually understand your requests in context, drawing on your listening history and the things you’ve said to the DJ. Spotify’s looking into AI that can "reason," not just recommend.
On the business side, Spotify’s also using generative AI to speed up internal processes like product testing and finance.
Still, the quarter wasn’t flawless: despite reaching 276 million paid subscribers, they missed revenue targets, and their stock dropped following concerns about ad performance.
Just play my music, please.
