ANTHROPIC

Welcome to the AI ad wars

Anthropic says it won’t be putting ads in its AI chatbot Claude, unlike OpenAI, which plans to introduce advertising in ChatGPT.

In a new blog post, Anthropic says Claude should stay focused on the user, without sponsored links, advertiser influence, or product placements showing up in conversations.

The company argues ads could get in the way, especially when people ask for sensitive advice like health or sleep support, or when they’re using Claude for work.

Anthropic notes that this could change in the future and says it would explain why, if it ever revisits the decision.

Quick take:

  • Claude will stay ad-free, for now

  • Anthropic is making the point loudly with Super Bowl commercials

  • OpenAI plans to bring ads to ChatGPT for some users

The Super Bowl moment

To highlight the announcement, Anthropic is also running a Super Bowl ad campaign that jokes about AI assistants interrupting users with adverts.

The Wall Street Journal reports a shorter version will air during the game.

OpenAI confirmed last month that ads are coming soon to ChatGPT for free users and those on its cheaper Go tier.

These ads will be clearly labelled and placed separately from responses.
