Welcome to AI wacky races, Germany. They’ve become the next big country to join the AI arms race.
The country has announced it is doubling its investment into AI to €1B.
The AI push comes as Germany attempts to turn around its economy from a recession, while the country's key industries face stiff competition from upstart electric vehicle makers and high energy costs.
As well as the investment, Germany envisages creating 150 new university labs for AI research, expanding data centres and making accessible the kind of complex public data sets from which AI techniques can benefit.

By comparison, the US government spent $3.3B on AI research in 2022. So maybe that €1B isn’t enough to make a difference.

India recently celebrated their success in landing on the moon with their Chandrayaan-3 lander. But did you know AI played a key role!?
The landing craft was equipped with high-tech AI sensors, measuring and analysing a constant stream of data.
The AI-driven sensors played an important role in ensuring a secure touchdown on the lunar surface. The tech helped the lander to anticipate lunar topography, identify potential hazards, and expertly navigate its descent, mitigating risks and enhancing safety.
But it doesn’t end there - AI will also help during the rover's lunar exploration phase. AI algorithms will provide guidance in terms of locating and mapping intriguing lunar features, as well as charting the rover's optimal route for efficient exploration.
I can’t wait to see how AI helps us explore space in the future.
