OPENAI

Videos on the go

OpenAI’s Sora video generator may soon be built directly into ChatGPT, according to a report from The Information.

Right now, Sora is only available through its own website or standalone app, which has not reached the same level of popularity as ChatGPT.

If added, users would be able to create videos inside ChatGPT itself, similar to how image generation was folded into the platform last year.

The move could make Sora far more widely used, but it would also raise familiar concerns around misuse.

Since launch, Sora has already been used to create realistic deepfakes of public figures and videos featuring copyrighted material.

Bringing it into ChatGPT would make the tool easier to access, which could increase the volume of misleading or manipulated content and give users more chances to test the limits of OpenAI’s safety controls.

The timing also matters.

In brief:

  • Sora could soon become a built-in ChatGPT feature rather than a separate tool.

  • Wider access may help adoption, but it could also increase risks around deepfakes and copyrighted content.

  • If launched inside ChatGPT, Sora may strengthen OpenAI’s product offering while adding more cost pressure.

Convenience tax

OpenAI is facing heavier competition, with Anthropic’s Claude gaining attention in recent weeks while ChatGPT has reportedly seen a rise in app uninstalls.

In that context, adding Sora to ChatGPT could be a way to make the product more appealing and keep users inside OpenAI’s ecosystem.

At the same time, the change may come with trade-offs for OpenAI itself. Video generation is expensive to run, and expanding Sora inside ChatGPT could push costs higher.

That may put more pressure on how OpenAI structures ChatGPT pricing in the future.
