OPENAI

There's a growing buzz that OpenAI might introduce a new AI model this week, possibly unveiling the long-awaited "Project Strawberry" - an AI with advanced reasoning capabilities.

In recent days, the AI community has been abuzz with hints, many of which centre around… strawberries.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has even shared a picture of a strawberry plant, sparking further speculation about a new AI model.

This has led to talk of a reasoning-focused model, potentially an updated version of GPT-4.

Project Strawberry, first leaked in May, is seen as a significant step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), where AI models can think and act more like humans.

However, whether this will be an enhancement of GPT-4 or an entirely new model remains unclear.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Project Strawberry is likely to focus on reasoning, possibly as a new version of GPT-4.

  • This model could transform sectors such as healthcare, finance, and scientific research.

  • An official announcement might coincide with Google's event this week, a tactic previously used by OpenAI.

The future is… ripe?

Leaked documents suggest that Strawberry may share similarities with a process known as Q*, where AI models are trained to make decisions based on action value estimates.

If accurate, this model could have wide-reaching impacts on scientific research, healthcare, finance, and even personal tasks like travel planning and budgeting.

The AI community is eagerly awaiting more details, particularly given the timing of Google's upcoming event, which might prompt OpenAI to reveal something significant.

Gimme those strawberries!

AI CHIPS

Huawei is developing a new AI chip to rival Nvidia in China, where U.S. export controls limit Nvidia's offerings.

Nvidia currently sells a less powerful H20 chip in China, complying with these restrictions, but it means Chinese firms can't access the latest Nvidia tech like the Blackwell AI chip.

Huawei therefore, sees a gap in the market that it can fill with a chip that outperforms Nvidia’s cutdown offering.

The updates:

  • Nvidia offers the H20 chip, a limited version of the H200, in China due to U.S. export controls.

  • Analysts are split; some think Huawei’s chip could erode Nvidia’s market share in China, while others see minimal impact due to existing restrictions.

  • Despite these issues, Nvidia’s stock has more than doubled in value this year.

When sanctions spark innovation

While Huawei’s chip could disrupt Nvidia’s position, the impact may be muted given Nvidia’s already limited presence in China.

Nvidia shares remain strong, up over 5% on Tuesday, at $115.39.

The chip wars don't stop for anybody.
