The UN Security Council is to hold their first formal discussions on the implications of AI this week.

The meeting will take place in New York, with Britain expecting to push for global dialogue and collaboration to ensure AI doesn’t get out of hand.

This follows last month’s meeting where U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres backed a proposal by some artificial intelligence executives for the creation of an international AI watchdog body, like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - although many leaders warned that outcome seemed incredibly unlikely.

The U.K. holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month and has been seeking a global leadership role in AI regulation, meaning this is the perfect opportunity for our fellow crumpet munchers to take the lead on AI dialogue and drive decision-making.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will chair the discussion on today and will hope for a positive outcome.

Stability CEO Emad Mostaque has warned that AI could be the biggest investment bubble ever, although predicts it to be a $1T opportunity.

The founder of the company behind Stable Diffusion warned that AI was in its early stages and wasn’t ready for mass adoption yet.

“I call it the ‘dot AI’ bubble, and it hasn’t even started yet,” he said on a call last week.

Mostaque said AI is far more important than technology like 5G and expects $1T of investment to pour in, predicting that companies who do not utilise AI properly will be punished by the stock market. Ouch.

Google, for example, lost $100B in value after its launch video for Bard showed it giving false information (lol).

All of this means - invest wisely people, don’t get caught up in the hype and find AI companies that bring real value before you take a gamble on them.
