🇬🇧 UK GOV INVESTS £100M IN AI CHIPS

The UK gov is reportedly investing £100M in the purchase of AI computer chips.

The money will be used as part of a drive to build a national AI resource in Britain, similar to those under development in the US and elsewhere. It is understood that the funds will be used to order key components from major chipmakers Nvidia, AMD and Intel.

UK gov be like

The government deal is in advanced stages and includes an order of up to 5,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia, the AI kings.

PM Rishi Sunak has been trying to convince international partners that Britain can act as a bridge between the US and China on AI.

While this sounds great, critics are pointing out the investment isn’t enough to keep up with superpowers. If Britain wants to become a real AI-leader, is £100M enough?

Is £100M enough to keep the UK ahead of the game?

📖 BOOK RECOMMENDATION

The best books to dive deeper and get real insights on artificial intelligence.

Thinking Machines

"Thinking Machines" by Luke Dormehl provides a historical journey through AI's evolution, discussing its present state and potential future, making it accessible to both newcomers and AI enthusiasts.

🎮 AI MAKING RACING GAMES BETTER

Until recently, racing against opponents in racing games was closer to trying to beat a train around a track than actually racing a driver.

But Artificial Intelligence has changed that. More recent titles, like Gran Turismo 7 and the newest Forzas, use machine learning to create a much better racing simulation, with AI drivers that actually… drive.

Sony’s AI research division worked on Gran Turismo’s ‘Sophy’ AI for years, in partnership with several universities’ own AI research teams. They trained the driving model on the game’s tracks thousands of times. This helped them build an ultra-realistic driving opponent.

Microsoft’s next Forza game sees each AI driver trained 26,000 times on each course, giving a huge variety of different scenarios, with AI being used to “learn” each track. Finally, drivers actually drive and don’t just follow the line programmed into them!

Racing games are taking a huge leap forward, thanks to AI.

We’ve said it many times - AI is a game-changer for games!
