OPENAI
This was never going to be a casual product update
OpenAI has paused plans for an erotic chatbot indefinitely as it shifts attention back to its main products.
The company said it wants more research into the effects of explicit AI chats and emotional dependence before making a final call.
The “adult mode” had already been delayed after internal debate over whether it should be released at all.
Staff and investors reportedly raised concerns about unhealthy attachment to AI, child safety risks, and the limited upside for the business.
The move is part of a wider reset at OpenAI, which is now focusing more on core tools like ChatGPT and coding products.
It also recently said it was winding down its Sora video model and social app.
The adult chatbot also brought technical problems.
In brief:
OpenAI has put the project on hold with no release date.
Concerns focused on emotional dependence, child safety, and reputational risk.
The company is putting more energy into its main AI products.
Red flags everywhere
OpenAI reportedly had to train models that were originally built to avoid explicit content, while also filtering illegal or harmful material from training data.
Code in the ChatGPT web app suggests the product, known internally as “Citron mode”, may have required age verification for users over 18.
But concerns remained about underage access.
OpenAI recently introduced an age prediction system after lawsuits from families who claim ChatGPT harmed teenagers.
One person familiar with the matter said the system has an error rate of more than 10 per cent, though OpenAI said it performs in line with industry standards.
