Italian newspaper Il Foglio just pulled off something no other paper has—publishing an entire edition written by AI.

The four-page Il Foglio AI comes bundled with its regular broadsheet and is available in print and online.

Editor Claudio Cerasa calls it “the first daily newspaper created entirely using artificial intelligence.”

Journalism.exe has entered the chat

Everything, from the headlines to the summaries, was AI-generated, with journalists only stepping in to ask questions and review the results.

This experiment comes as media outlets worldwide try to figure out how AI fits into journalism.

BBC News, for example, recently announced plans to use AI for personalized content.

The AI-written edition tackled a mix of global and local stories:

  • A front-page piece on Italy’s pro-Trump conservatives and their stance on “cancel culture.”

  • A column listing “10 betrayals” by Vladimir Putin over two decades.

  • A report on Italy’s economy highlighted salary increases for 750,000 workers.

  • A cultural piece on “situationships” and why young Europeans are avoiding traditional relationships.

While the content was clear and well-structured, none of the articles included direct quotes from human sources.

So AI can write about "situationships," but can it explain them to my mum?
