AI WORKFORCE
The vintage hiring problem
Women made up just 26% of new hires for AI jobs in the US last year, according to new LinkedIn data.
In non-AI jobs, women made up around half of new hires.
The gap gets wider in some of the best-paid AI roles.
Men took 74% of new AI jobs in 2025, and 82% of new hires for “member of technical staff” roles were men.
These jobs, common at AI labs, have a median advertised salary of $223,000 this year.
In brief:
74% of new AI hires were men
82% of top technical hires were men
Lower-paid data roles were roughly 50/50
AI boys’ club?
Lower-paid roles were much more balanced.
Data annotation jobs, with a median salary of around $51,000, were split roughly 50/50 between men and women.
AI jobs still make up a small part of the overall labour market, but LinkedIn says the figures show the gender gap in tech is continuing into the AI boom.
