The UK just got its biggest AI flex yet
Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is putting £5bn ($6.8bn) into UK artificial intelligence over the next two years.
The money will go towards new infrastructure and research, including a £735m data centre in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire.
Some of the funding will also support London-based DeepMind, led by Sir Demis Hassabis, which is known for using AI to drive major advances in science.

Alphabet’s president, Ruth Porat, said the UK has “profound opportunities” in science and technology but stressed that risks also need to be managed if the benefits of AI are to be fully realised.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves called the investment a “powerful vote of confidence” in both the UK economy and its partnership with the US.
