The Siri delay now has leadership consequences
Apple has confirmed that its AI chief, John Giannandrea, is stepping down after delays to its upgraded, AI-powered Siri.
The change comes as Apple works to get its AI plans back on track following the postponed launch earlier this year.
Amar Subramanya has been appointed as Apple’s new Vice President of AI.
He previously spent 16 years at Google before moving to Microsoft’s AI division in 2023.
At Apple, he will lead AI model development, machine learning research, and AI safety. He will report to Apple’s software chief, Craig Federighi.
Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 after leading AI and Search at Google, with the goal of improving Siri.
In March, Apple said the personalised Siri update was delayed because development was taking longer than expected.
A later Bloomberg report said Apple CEO Tim Cook had lost confidence in his leadership, with oversight moving to Mike Rockwell.
Giannandrea will stay on as an advisor before retiring in spring 2026.
Here’s what happened:
Apple is reshaping its AI leadership after Siri delays.
Amar Subramanya will now lead Apple’s AI development and safety work.
The upgraded Siri is still expected to launch next spring.
Leadership shuffle?
Apple says Subramanya’s experience in turning AI research into products will support future Apple Intelligence features.
The company still plans to launch its upgraded Siri next spring, with reports suggesting some features may use a custom version of Google Gemini.
