AI SCIENCE
The scientific paper pile is out of control
Scientists are publishing so many papers that even experts can struggle to keep up, including in their own field.
Researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have now shown how AI can help sort through that overload and point to possible new research ideas.
In a study published in Nature Machine Intelligence, the team focused on materials science, a field that supports technologies like batteries, solar panels, electronics, and medical devices.
Because it connects to so many industries, it also produces a huge amount of research.
To analyse that information, the researchers combined large language models with machine learning.
The AI first scanned papers to pick out key scientific terms and concepts.
It then mapped how often those terms appeared together, building a network of related ideas.
In brief:
AI scanned research papers to find links between scientific ideas.
Growing links between topics may point to new areas of research.
The tool is meant to support researchers, not replace them.

By tracking how those links changed over time, the system could spot topic pairings that were becoming more common.
That may help researchers identify growing areas of interest, or find links between ideas that have not been explored much yet.
The team says the tool is not meant to replace scientists.
Instead, it is designed to help them spot patterns, generate ideas, and find new opportunities for collaboration more easily.
The study suggests AI could become a useful way to make sense of large volumes of research, not just in materials science, but in other fields too.
