The race might need a few speed bumps
Sam Altman has called for a US-led global forum to set safety rules for advanced AI, arguing that the technology needs clear standards before it can be shared widely.
The idea came after a recent G7 meeting in France, where world leaders and AI industry figures discussed how to manage powerful AI systems.
The proposed forum would bring together governments, independent experts and other key voices to test AI models, assess risks and decide who gets access.
Countries would join by agreeing to follow shared rules, while companies in those countries could be regularly certified to use advanced AI systems.
Basically, a VIP list, but with fewer velvet ropes and more existential risk management.
In brief:
Advanced AI may need global safety standards before wider release.
A US-led forum could set rules, assess risks and certify access.
Governments, not just AI labs, should make the biggest decisions.
License to prompt
The aim is to stop AI labs from rushing ahead under commercial pressure, while making sure the benefits of AI do not end up controlled by a small group of companies.
AI companies may build the tech, but governments and citizens should help decide how it is used.
Silicon Valley should not be writing the rules, marking its own homework and handing itself a gold star.
