OPENAI
The name fight no one asked for
OpenAI has been told it can’t use the word “cameo” in its Sora video app for the next month.
A U.S. judge issued a temporary order stopping the company from using the term or anything similar, like “Kameo” or “CameoVideo.”
The decision comes after Cameo, the service that sells personalised celebrity videos, sued OpenAI in October.
The issue began when Sora launched a feature also called “Cameo,” which let users generate AI characters of themselves or others and place them into videos.
Three things to note:
OpenAI can’t use “cameo” in Sora until late December.
Cameo argues the name causes confusion; OpenAI disagrees.
A longer-term decision will be made at a hearing on 19 December.
A very dramatic rebrand season
OpenAI says it disagrees with the claim that anyone can control the word. Cameo says the order helps avoid confusion for users.
The restriction lasts until 22 December, with another hearing on 19 December to decide if it should stay in place.
