META

Meta’s AI chatbot will soon link directly to Reuters news in its responses, following a multi-year agreement with Reuters.

This is Meta’s first deal with a news agency to include verified news content in its chatbot answers, making reliable Reuters links accessible on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.

Until now, Meta’s AI tools have focused on celebrity chatbots and interactive features, but this shift to news-based responses aligns with other tech companies like OpenAI.

Recently, outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and The Atlantic signed similar agreements with OpenAI, choosing to engage with AI as part of journalism’s shift toward digital platforms.

Reuters will be paid for its content in Meta’s chatbot, though exact details are not public.

In summary:

  • Meta’s deal with Reuters integrates reliable news into AI responses, marking a change in Meta’s approach.

  • While Meta is partnering with news providers, it continues to push back against wider rules that would require payment to publishers.

  • This move contrasts with Meta’s earlier approach on Threads, where hard news was discouraged.

The “trust us” era

Meta’s Reuters partnership happens at a time of ongoing debates around payments to publishers.

In Canada, Meta blocked news on Facebook and Instagram rather than comply with a law that requires payment to news publishers.

Meta really went ‘we’re serious now’ with Reuters.

AI SCIENCE

Scientists are getting closer to understanding what pigs are saying with the help of a new AI tool.

The tool can already pick up on pig sounds and interpret their emotions, which could help improve animal welfare on farms.

The tool was developed by researchers from universities across Europe.

They trained it on thousands of pig sounds recorded in different situations—such as play, isolation, and competing for food.

By studying these sounds, the AI can tell if a pig feels good or stressed.

Findings show that pigs on free-range or organic farms, where they can roam, make fewer stress noises than those on standard farms.

Oink Oink, can you hear me?

This research could eventually lead to farm labels that allow shoppers to make informed welfare choices.

The study findings:

  • Short grunts show positive emotions.

  • Long grunts signal discomfort.

  • High-pitched squeals or screams often indicate stress.

In the future, this tool might even be available as an app, letting farmers get a quick read on their pigs’ moods with just a tap on their phone.
