The five-day work week may start looking shaky

OpenAI says employers should start thinking about changes like a four-day work week as AI becomes more common in the workplace.

In a new policy paper, the company said AI could bring clear benefits but also disrupt jobs and working life.

It suggested that businesses should share some of the gains with workers, instead of keeping all the value for themselves.

One idea is testing a four-day week without cutting pay.

Other suggestions include better pension contributions, more support for healthcare costs, and help with childcare.

OpenAI also said there should be more focus on people-facing jobs like childcare, education, and healthcare, where human skills still matter most.

A few key points:

  • OpenAI says firms should consider giving workers more support as AI boosts efficiency.

  • It points to jobs in healthcare, education, and childcare as areas likely to stay important.

  • Some experts think AI could have a big impact, but not as quickly as tech companies claim.

AI said log off

The company believes AI tools are improving quickly and may soon be able to complete projects that currently take people months.

That could change how businesses work and how people think about jobs and opportunity.

Still, not everyone agrees the impact will happen that fast.

Professor Gina Neff from the University of Cambridge said these ideas are not entirely new and would need major political and economic change to work.

The report also suggests a public wealth fund, which would give citizens a share in AI-driven growth. Similar ideas have already been raised by Anthropic.
