NVIDIA

The $500bn construction project

Nvidia has partnered with some of Wall Street’s biggest investors to help raise $500bn for AI infrastructure.

The chipmaker is working with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to fund projects including data centres, chip factories and the systems needed to power and cool them.

Nvidia says investors are starting to treat AI computing power, known as “compute”, as its own type of infrastructure investment.

The money will support Nvidia projects and those built by its partners, as demand for AI chips continues to grow.

The key points:

  • Nvidia is working with major investors to raise up to $500bn for AI infrastructure.

  • The funding will help build data centres, chip factories and other AI systems.

  • Spending on AI keeps rising, but investors are watching closely to see whether it pays off.

Companies including Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, OpenAI and Anthropic all use Nvidia GPUs to power AI products and services.

Tech companies have already spent more than $1tn on AI projects and infrastructure in the past three years, with more spending expected.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company is now helping build what he calls “AI factories”: large-scale infrastructure designed specifically to run AI.

The investment boom is also raising questions over whether all of these expensive projects will deliver strong enough returns in the future.

Imagine needing $500bn because everyone keeps asking Claude to rewrite an email. Also could be my fault, sorry guys. - MG
