META

That lasted long

Meta has removed an AI feature that let people edit photos from public Instagram accounts after it faced criticism over privacy and misuse.

The feature launched earlier this week as part of Muse Image, Meta’s new AI image generator.

Users could create images by tagging a public Instagram account as a visual reference.

However, the person whose photos were used would not be notified.

The tool quickly faced backlash from users and talent agencies, who warned it could be used to create inappropriate or misleading images without permission.

Here’s what you should know:

  • The feature used public Instagram photos as AI references.

  • Account owners were not told when their images were used.

  • Meta removed the tool after criticism from users and talent agencies.

Photos off limits

Meta has now said the feature “missed the mark” and removed it.

The company said it wanted to give people a creative tool while still letting users control how their public content was used.

Critics, however, questioned whether those controls were clear or strong enough.

The move comes as social media platforms face growing pressure over AI-generated images, especially non-consensual sexual content involving women and public figures.
