ANTHROPIC

That didn’t slow them down

Anthropic is expanding a key feature of its AI chatbot, Claude.

The company announced that free users can now access the memory feature, allowing Claude to remember context across conversations.

The tool was previously limited to paid subscribers.

The move brings Claude closer to competitors like ChatGPT, which already offers a similar capability on its free plan.

Anthropic is also making it easier for users to switch platforms by allowing them to import past conversations from other chatbots, including ChatGPT, through a simple copy-and-paste process.

The update comes as interest in Anthropic’s products has increased following a public dispute with the US Department of Defense over potential uses of its technology in surveillance and autonomous weapons.

After the disagreement, President Donald Trump ordered US agencies to remove Claude from their systems, and the Pentagon labelled Anthropic a supply-chain risk.

In brief:

  • Claude’s memory feature is now available to free users.

  • Anthropic says free users are up 60% and sign-ups have quadrupled since January.

  • A surge in traffic caused a short service disruption earlier this week.

Despite this, Claude’s user base continues to grow.

Anthropic says free active users have increased by more than 60%, while daily sign-ups have quadrupled since January.

Rising demand also caused a brief service outage on Monday, which the company said was linked to the sharp spike in traffic.

The issue was resolved later that morning.
