Teens are getting a different ChatGPT

OpenAI is adding new safety features for under-18s using ChatGPT, with more controls over how and when teens use the chatbot.

Teen accounts will be able to switch off human-like voice replies, set “quiet times” when ChatGPT is unavailable, and schedule Study Mode during certain hours.

They’ll also get regular reminders to take breaks and that ChatGPT is AI, not a person.

In brief:

  • Teens can turn off voice replies and set time limits.

  • Study Mode can switch on automatically.

  • Some harmful prompts can trigger parental alerts.

OpenAI is also expanding parental alerts.

Some potentially harmful prompts, including those linked to eating disorders, can be reviewed by a human and flagged to parents with connected accounts.

The changes come as concerns grow around how young people use AI for learning, schoolwork and emotional support.
