Spotify wants you to design your own Discover Weekly

Spotify is testing a new feature called Promoted Playlists that gives listeners more control over what the algorithm recommends.

It’s starting with Premium users in New Zealand before expanding to other countries.

The tool lets you type out exactly what you want to hear, using longer and more detailed prompts than Spotify’s previous AI playlists.

It also looks at your full listening history, not just what you’ve played recently, to build a playlist that matches your taste more accurately.

You can keep adjusting the prompt, make it more specific, and choose how often the playlist updates.

What to know:

  • Spotify’s new tool uses longer prompts and your full listening history to build playlists.

  • You can customise the playlist and set how often it refreshes.

  • More platforms are now giving users extra control over their algorithms.

Prompt it like you mean it!

It’s essentially a custom version of Discover Weekly or Daily Mixes, shaped around whatever mood, genre, or time period you want to follow.

Spotify says the playlists will include brief explanations for why certain songs were chosen, along with suggested prompts to help people get started.

Other apps are doing similar things, with Instagram adding new controls for Reels and Bluesky letting users switch between different algorithms.
