ANTHROPIC

SDKs are suddenly the main character

Anthropic has acquired Stainless, a startup that helps companies create and update software development kits, known as SDKs.

The deal terms were not shared, but The Information previously reported that Anthropic was in talks to buy Stainless for more than $300 million.

Founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray, Stainless builds tools that turn API details into ready-to-use SDKs for languages like Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Go, and Java.

The startup’s tools were used by several major AI and tech companies, including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Replicate, Runway, and Cloudflare.

The key bits:

  • Anthropic has bought Stainless, a startup that builds SDK tools.

  • The deal was reportedly discussed at more than $300 million.

  • Stainless’s hosted tools will be shut down, meaning competitors will need other options.

Anthropic now plans to shut down Stainless’s hosted products, including its SDK generator.

Current customers will still own the SDKs they have already created and can continue editing them.

The deal is important because SDKs help developers connect apps and services to AI systems. As AI agents become more useful, those connections matter even more.

Anthropic said Stainless has helped generate every official Anthropic SDK since its API launched.
