TODAY IN MINDSTREAM:

An absolutely giant bomb exploded in the world of AI last night, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was SACKED without warning.

President and founder Greg Brockman was also removed from his position.

Chief technology officer Mira Murati will be the interim CEO, effective immediately. The company will be conducting a search for a permanent CEO successor.

The bombshell announcement came with the following statement:

“Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” the company said in its blog post. “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

Considering how incredibly well OpenAI is doing, there must be something going on here. Has Altman mislead the board of the progress and finances at the company? Something isn’t right here!

Dare I say this could be the very beginning of the end of OpenAI!?

Microsoft has released an AI tool that can copy faces and voices… in other words, a deepfake tool!

Announced at Microsoft Ignite 2023, Azure AI Speech is trained with human images and allows users to input a script that can then be “read” aloud by a photorealistic avatar created with artificial intelligence.

Users can either choose a preloaded Microsoft avatar or upload footage of a person whose voice and likeness they want to replicate.

The tool has immediately come under criticism, as people predict it will be used for nefarious means, however Microsoft has a counter for this:

The company said the new text-to-speech software is being released with a variety of limits and safeguards to prevent misuse. “As part of Microsoft’s commitment to responsible AI, text to speech avatar is designed with the intention of protecting the rights of individuals and society, fostering transparent human-computer interaction, and counteracting the proliferation of harmful deepfakes and misleading content,”.
