Regulation isn’t optional anymore
Sam Altman said the world may need an international group to coordinate AI safety, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Speaking at an AI summit in New Delhi, he warned that powerful open-source AI models could be misused, including in biology, and said protecting against these risks will require a society-wide effort.
In brief:
Altman wants global coordination on AI safety.
Advanced AI could bring serious misuse risks.
OpenAI is expanding infrastructure work in India.
AI needs grown-up rules
Altman also argued that AI should be widely available, but added that strong safeguards and regulations are urgently needed as the technology improves quickly.
He noted that ChatGPT has around 100 million weekly users in India, many of them students.
OpenAI also announced a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services to help build data centre infrastructure in India.
