  • Rabbit R1 - Is it better than Siri?

AI GADGETS

Siri, Google Assistant, and the new Rabbit R1 were put to the test on various tasks by The Verge, to see how the AI gadget stacks up to our current smartphone assistants.

For example, when asked about today's weather, Siri and Google Assistant quickly said, "Rain," while Rabbit R1 offered a more detailed forecast, though a bit slower.

During the challenges, the testers noticed a few important points:

  • The assistants varied in how quickly and in how much detail they responded.

  • They proved useful, offering advice on everything from the weather to meal ideas.

  • The R1 still lacks some basic functionality.

The R1 was unable to set a simple timer, meaning it won’t be replacing Siri’s main functionality anytime soon (you know it’s true).

Up next was their ability to recognise everyday objects.

When shown a sticky note dispenser shaped like an old Polaroid camera, Google Assistant identified it correctly, whereas Rabbit R1 mistook it for a real camera, highlighting differences in how they interpret visuals, and a fail for the R1, although Siri can’t identify anything but houseplants.

When asked to suggest meals based on available ingredients, both Google Assistant and Rabbit R1 recommended pasta or stir-fry, showing they can offer simple solutions quickly based on visual data.

The R1 is an interesting gadget and at $199, is priced low enough that it might shift an impressive number of units. But we can’t help but feel like everything this offers will be inside our phones within a couple of years.

PROGRAMMING

GitHub is trying to revolutionise software development with its new Copilot Workspace, announced just before their GitHub Universe conference in San Francisco.

This new AI-driven environment improves how developers start, plan, and manage coding projects through natural language.

Jonathan Carter, head of GitHub's R&D team, describes Copilot Workspace as an advancement of their current AI tool, Copilot.

This innovation is designed to help developers tackle coding projects from the very beginning, simplifying complex decisions and editing processes across the codebase.

It fosters a partnership between the developer and AI, making coding more intuitive.

Can Github become profitable?

Copilot costs GitHub around $20 per user monthly, but the company sees significant potential for Workspace by adding more features to attract a larger user base - which it needs to help turn the company profitable.

Copilot Workspace streamlines software development by automatically creating plans and generating code for specific tasks, which developers can then refine.

This methodical approach is designed to ease the initial steps of coding projects and reduce common entry barriers for developers.

What you should know:

  • Copilot Workspace uses AI to streamline the initiation and execution of coding tasks.

  • Fully integrates with GitHub, enhancing workflow and is accessible across multiple devices.

  • GitHub aims to refine Workspace based on user insights during its preview phase to tackle both technical and practical challenges of AI in software development.

With its entry into technical preview, Workspace is paving the way for deeper AI integration in software development, potentially redefining AI-assisted coding practices.

AI writing code sounds like a dream come true for programmers - until they realise they’re fired.
