Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Rankin is the only human who has survived falling through a cumulonimbus cloud. He fell 45,000 feet, had to avoid drowning by holding his breath, and suffered serious decompression and frostbite. It gets even crazier than that, but we don’t have the space to describe his entire ordeal.

What’s in store:

  • What can prisoners do for AI? Finland is finding out.

  • LinkedIn is in trouble with a UK watchdog.

  • Around the web: SpaceX sued by Cards Against Humanity (seriously).

  • Rethink how you work with nowork.ai.

AI POLICY

When you think of prison jobs, you probably imagine cleaning the toilets or tough manual labour.

But Finland is bringing prison work into the 21st century (I mean, check out their average prison cell).

Finnish prisoners are being employed to label data in a bid to improve the accuracy of AI models used by Finnish companies.

The scheme not only benefits AI models but also the prisoners, by giving them critical digital skills for when they are released.

The story in brief:

  • Finnish prisoners are helping label data for better AI outputs.

  • It will also help AI models understand the Finnish language better.

  • Finland has a strong focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment.

Who, what and how?

Metroc is a Finnish data company with vast swathes of data. They approached the Finnish Prison and Probation Service with the idea of using prisoners to sort their data.

AI models are heavily skewed towards the English language, so the work will also help AI models better understand Finnish.

Scandinavian prisons look to recreate outside conditions as closely as possible and use prison as a tool for rehabilitation rather than punishment.

Finland has one of the lowest incarceration rates in the world, so draw your own conclusions.

If I’m ever arrested, I’m applying to go to Finnish prison.

AI RESOURCES

We are being bombarded by the next big AI thing.

Another tool.

Another model.

Faster, more capable, more intelligent.

Yet, most of us struggle with the main topic that AI brings – actually using our talents, time, and capabilities in work to the fullest.

This European bestseller "The Future of No Work" from seasoned speaker and digital transformation expert Filip Drimalka has already helped people like you switch their mindset from pre-AI to future-proof.

LEGAL AI

LinkedIn has been forced to pause training its AI model on UK data after a regulator raised concerns.

Users were quietly opted in all around the world, but the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) raised concerns, and UK users will now be able to opt out.

LinkedIn says that the more niche content on the platform can help AI create much more naturally sounding CVs / resumes and boost career opportunities.

The key bits:

  • LinkedIn is using global user data to train AI.

  • This is now paused in the UK and EU.

  • It follows a similar move from Meta which also led to backlash.

Following in Zuck’s footsteps

This isn’t the first time a tech company has been caught using UK data in a grey area. Meta was also recently forced to U-turn on its plan to use UK users’ Facebook and Instagram posts to train its AI models.

Social networks hold vast amounts of useful data which can be used to make AI models appear more natural.

Train AI on books, not influencers. PLEASE.
