PERPLEXITY
Perplexity AI, a rising star in the AI search sector, has experienced extraordinary growth, boosting its monthly revenue and usage by sevenfold since the start of the year.
This impressive surge follows a $250 million funding round, which has seen the company’s valuation triple to $3 billion.
Perplexity’s AI-powered search engine, which answered 250 million questions last month alone, is now shifting from a subscription model to an advertising-focused approach.
This change positions the start-up as a contender to Google in the highly competitive search industry.
Google, on the other hand, is integrating more AI features into its core search product, while OpenAI introduced its own search tool, SearchGPT.
The takeaways:
Perplexity AI has boosted its valuation to $3 billion following substantial investment.
The company is transitioning from a subscription model to advertising, positioning itself against Google.
Concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact of advertising on user trust, particularly as AI's reliability continues to be a topic of debate.
When small players make big waves
Despite facing competition from larger, more established companies, Perplexity remains focused on providing high-quality answers sourced from reliable information.
This focus sets it apart from broader search engines like Google.
However, the decision to introduce advertising has sparked concerns about whether it might undermine user trust, especially in a market where the reliability of AI remains a significant issue.
The AI search landscape is heating up, with Perplexity’s growth illustrating the potential for new players to challenge established giants.
Yet, as AI becomes more prevalent in search, the question remains whether it can consistently deliver accurate results at scale, a challenge that even the most advanced systems have yet to fully overcome.
Who knew a start-up could teach Google a thing or two about AI search?

ROBOCALLS
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has introduced new rules aiming to improve transparency around AI-driven robocalls.
These rules would require companies to clearly disclose if they plan to use artificial intelligence in phone calls or text messages when looking for consent from recipients.
This move expands on the existing ban against AI-generated robocalls without explicit consent.
Here are the new rules:
Callers must inform recipients if they intend to use AI for future communications.
An AI-generated call is defined as one that uses technology, like machine learning or predictive algorithms, to create artificial voice or text content.
Individuals with speech or hearing disabilities using AI-generated voice software would be exempt, provided the calls are free of unsolicited advertisements and don’t incur charges for the recipients.

The FCC is also seeking public feedback on the potential risks of scammers exploiting these exemptions and how to enhance the rules to prevent such abuse.
