MILITARY AI
Oxford, Cambridge, and Lincoln are building an AI army
The University of Lincoln has been chosen to lead a £1 million Ministry of Defence project using AI to strengthen the UK’s national security.
It will head a team of seven UK universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, to explore how AI can help the government and military make smarter, faster decisions during threats like cyberattacks, terrorism, or environmental crises.
AI will be tested in “wargaming” simulations to study both sides’ moves and find better ways to respond in real-life situations.
The research could also guide how emergency services, such as the police, handle future national security issues.
Here’s what you should know:
University of Lincoln will lead a £1m MoD AI defence project with Oxford and Cambridge.
The focus is on AI-powered wargaming and decision-making for national security.
Existing AI tech from local industries will be repurposed for defence research.
The nerds are saving the nation
Professor Fiona Strens said the project will build on AI tools first developed for Lincolnshire’s food industry, now adapted to solve defence problems.
She added that since AI evolves quickly, the Ministry of Defence needs fresh research to keep up.
The university already works with 84 local AI companies, many started by its graduates, and is part of regional defence and security projects like DecisionWorks.
Lincoln really went from farming tech to a full-on military strategist arc.
