Opera thinks your tabs should work like apps

Opera has launched Neon, a new AI-focused browser that aims to make the “agentic browser” concept mainstream.

For $19.99 per month, users can try features like building AI-powered apps with prompts and creating repeatable workflows through a system called Cards.

Neon comes with several tools: a chatbot for questions, Neon Do for handling tasks (like summarising a blog and posting it to Slack), and the ability to fetch details from your browsing history.

It can also generate code snippets to build tables and charts.

The Cards system works like IFTTT, combining prompts to automate tasks. Users can design their own or borrow from the community.

Neon also introduces Tasks, which organise AI chats and browser tabs into contained workspaces, similar to features in Arc or Dia.

TL;DR

  • Opera Neon costs $19.99 per month and targets heavy AI users

  • Features include AI task automation (Cards), workspace management (Tasks), and code generation

  • Competes with Perplexity, Dia, and Big Tech browsers adding AI

Cards = AI Lego blocks

Opera is pitching Neon at “power users” who rely heavily on AI, setting it against rivals like Perplexity’s Comet, Dia, and AI features being added to Chrome and Edge.

Still, the real test will be how well its demos translate into everyday use.

If it doesn’t actually order my groceries, I’m not paying.
