OpenAI wants to make movies faster than Hollywood

OpenAI is helping create “Critterz,” an animated film made mostly with AI.

The goal is to make movies faster and cheaper, and see if AI can deliver cinema-quality results.

The film follows a group of forest creatures on an adventure after a stranger disrupts their village.

Director Chad Nelson started the project in 2021 using OpenAI’s DALL·E and is now working with studios in London and Los Angeles.

The team hopes to premiere the movie at the Cannes Film Festival next May.

Here’s what you should know:

  • “Critterz” is being made in nine months instead of three years.

  • Costs are capped at $30 million, well below typical animated films.

  • OpenAI’s tools power the visuals, but actors and artists still play a key role.

Fast but not furious

Unlike most animated films, “Critterz” will be made in nine months instead of three years and on a budget under $30 million.

Human actors will voice the characters, and artists will create sketches that OpenAI’s tools, including GPT-5, will turn into animated visuals.

Hollywood is watching closely. While studios like Disney and Netflix are experimenting with AI, there are growing concerns about copyright and job losses.

Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. Discovery have all filed lawsuits against AI image providers over copyright disputes.

Critterz better serve Pixar-level tears, or we riot.
