A teacher’s worst nightmare: A couple once attempted to name their child "Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116," pronounced "Albin," as a protest against Sweden's naming laws. The name was ultimately rejected, in a win for autocorrects everywhere.

AI JOURNALISM

The Financial Times (FT) has agreed to a deal with OpenAI, in an attempt to merge traditional media with AI technology.

The groundbreaking partnership allows ChatGPT to use FT content, giving users summaries, quotes, and links directly to articles.

All content used from FT is clearly credited to the publication.

What you should know:

  • The deal will help improve news delivery through AI, providing summaries and direct article links.

  • FT and OpenAI are creating new AI products to improve how users interact with and access information.

  • The partnership highlights the importance of human journalism and advocates for fair payment for media content used in AI.

Besides integrating content, FT is pushing boundaries with OpenAI by co-developing tools to increase user engagement.

They’ve launched a beta AI search tool powered by Anthropic’s Claude model, which helps subscribers search through the publication’s vast article database efficiently.

FT's CEO, John Ridding, emphasises the need to balance tech innovation with journalistic values.

To pay or not to pay?

Ridding argues that AI platforms should properly compensate news organisations for their content, stressing the benefits of including trustworthy sources in AI outputs.

This collaboration reflects a larger trend of AI companies working with media outlets.

However, the financial terms with OpenAI are modest compared to offers from bigger tech companies like Apple.

Meanwhile, other publishers like The New York Times have pursued legal actions against OpenAI for copyright issues, showing the complex relationships between AI firms and news organisations as the media landscape evolves.

If you can’t beat them, join them.

Leaders in AI

Alex Karp

Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, has been pivotal in securing sensitive and often debated contracts with U.S. government agencies over the past two decades, involving entities like ICE, the FBI, and the CIA.

With a background in philosophy and a co-founder of Palantir alongside Peter Thiel, Karp champions his company's mission as a crucial, albeit previously unpopular, "higher calling" in the tech world.

DEEPFAKES

In a recent incident highlighting the challenges with AI, BBC presenter Liz Bonnin's voice was replicated using AI to endorse a product without her permission.

Initially, the AI-generated message mimicked Bonnin's Irish accent, but soon, the accent shifted to Australian and then English - the smoking gun revealing the fakery.

Celebrity endorsement gone wrong

Howard Carter, CEO of Incognito, was tricked by the sophisticated scam involving a fake profile pretending to be Bonnin.

Convinced by AI-generated voice messages and a bogus endorsement contract, Carter transferred £20,000 to a scammer's account.

The campaign was launched with Bonnin's supposed backing, which she quickly denied, clarifying she had never agreed to it.

Here are the key bits:

  • Bonnin's voice impersonation demonstrates AI's potential for identity fraud, where artificial voices can convincingly mimic real people without their permission.

  • The incident highlights the need for thorough verification. Carter's experience shows how professionals can be fooled by advanced AI impersonations, emphasising caution in digital dealings.

  • The situation stresses the urgent need for stricter AI regulations to prevent misuse and protect individual identities.

Bonnin described feeling unsettled and violated by the incident, noting the AI voice's unnatural shifts and lack of flow.

This case serves as a reminder of AI's potential dangers and the need for better safeguards and regulatory measures.
