OPENAI
Lilian Weng, OpenAI’s VP of Research and Safety, recently announced her departure after seven years with the company.
Her last day will be November 15, marking another significant exit from OpenAI’s top teams.
Weng, who led the Safety Systems team, expressed pride in her colleagues’ work and confidence in their future efforts.
Weng’s departure follows a series of high-profile exists, including Ilya Sutskever, and Jan Leike, former leaders of OpenAI’s dissolved Superalignment team, and policy researcher Miles Brundage, whose AGO readiness team was also recently disbanded.
These departures have sparked questions about whether OpenAI’s push for commercial growth may be overshadowing its commitment to safety.
Here’s what you should know:
Weng spent seven years at OpenAI, progressing from robotics research to leading AI safety initiatives.
Other senior figures, including the former CTO Mira Murati and top researchers, have also left OpenAI.
OpenAI asserts its continued focus on safety, with plans to develop strong technical safeguards.
Why so many Goodbyes?
An OpenAI spokesperson underscored the company's dedication to safety, thanking Weng for her work in establishing "rigorous technical safeguards."
OpenAI remains committed to system safety and reliability, even amidst these leadership changes.
I guess this is just normal for OpenAI now.

What We’re Watching
AlphaGo is a documentary that follows the groundbreaking 2016 showdown between the AI program AlphaGo, developed by DeepMind, and Lee Sedol, one of the world’s top players of the ancient board game Go.
The film highlights how AlphaGo mastered the complex game, surpassing human capabilities and reshaping perceptions of AI potential.
Google has introduced Learn About, a new AI tool designed for learning.
Unlike chatbots like Gemini or ChatGPT, it’s built on Google’s LearnLM model, which aligns with educational research to support how people learn.
Learn About provides more visuals and interactive features, making information easier to understand and retain.
In a comparison of Learn About and Google Gemini using the prompt, “How big is the universe?” both tools responded with “about 93 billion light-years in diameter.”
However, their presentations differed: Gemini included a Wikipedia diagram and a brief summary with source links, while Learn About used an image from Physics Forums and offered related educational content.
It also added features like “why it matters” and “Build your vocab,” providing context and word definitions.
In brief:
Learn About adds educational visuals, context, and vocabulary aids.
Unlike Gemini, it emphasises learning resources over straightforward facts.
It accurately addresses quirky questions, like “best glue for pizza.”
Smart answers, smarter context
To test Learn About further, a question was posed about the “best kind of glue to put on a pizza.”
Learn About correctly flagged this as a “common misconception,” a useful feature that signals certain questions come up frequently.
Who knew AI could explain stuff like a study buddy?
