TODAY IN MINDSTREAM:

OpenAI, the ChatGPT daddies, have been sued by Comedian Sarah Silverman and two others. The suit alleges copyright infringement, based on the machine learning undertaken by ChatGPT.

They claim that the models were trained on their work without permission, citing the fact the bot is able to summarise books that it shouldn’t have had legal access to but apparently did through illegal book-sharing websites.

The lawsuit will be a headache for ChatGPT and could open the floodgates for further litigation, as similar concerns have been raised by others. If Silverman and co win, OpenAI could be in serious trouble.

Planned EU regulation intends to make it compulsory for generative AI models to share all of the data they have been trained on, although this has seen backlash.

Despite the AI tool exploding in popularity in the last 6 months, and ChatGPT being "the fastest-growing consumer application ever, the website reported a 9.7% drop in traffic from May to June, suggesting the novelty may have worn off for some users, or that they are using other text generators like Bard.

The decline could indicate that AI may remain the realm of experts for a little while longer, as the public may not see a use case for generation tools like GPT.

Others have suggested the decline coincides with the end of the educational year, as students and school children are no longer being burdened with homework!

Maybe only once AI is powering Siri and Alexa will we see it truly ingrained into our lives. As it stands, ChatGPT doesn’t even have an app! Hurry up guys!
