AI EDUCATION

Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI, is launching a new venture called Eureka Labs,

This company aims to combine AI with education by developing AI assistants to support and expand course materials created by human teachers.

Karparthy announced on X that Eureka Lab’s first product would be an undergraduate course designed to teach students how to train their own AI systems, modelled as smaller versions of the company’s AI teaching assistant.

He believes this integration of human and AI teaching could revolutionise education, making it easier for anyone to learn anything.

Here’s what you should know about it:

  • Eureka Labs will create AI teaching assistants to enhance human-designed courses.

  • The first product is an AI training course for undergraduates.

  • Karpathy has a significant background in AI, with experience at OpenAI and Tesla.

AI teaching assistants?

Karpathy is well-known in the AI industry, having played key roles at both OpenAI and Tesla, where he led the AI team behind Tesla’s Autopilot system.

After leaving OpenAI earlier this year, he is now focused on Eureka Labs.

AI probably would have more patience than Miss Rita in physics class.

AI BOTS

On July 9th, Lattice’s CEO Sarah Franklin announced a bold move: treating AI bots like employees.

The plan was to create official employee records for digital workers, onboard them, set goals, and assign managers like human employees.

Here’s what happened:

  • There was significant backlash from HR professionals and AI experts.

  • Franklin stated they were not personifying AI, but it wasn’t enough.

  • Other companies like Cognition AI and Qualified are also exploring digital workers.

The backlash

By July 12th, after facing considerable criticism, Lattice decided to halt this initiative.

Here’s a snapshot of the reactions:

  • Hebba Youssef, Workweek’s Chief People Officer, questioned the rationale behind this move.

  • HR professional Amanda Halle noted that several crucial steps were overlooked.

  • Sawyer Middeleer from Aomni criticised the strategy and messaging.

Franklin attempted to clarify Lattice’s intentions, stating they were not advocating for the personification of AI but responding to trends seen with other AI bots like Cognition AI’s Devin and Qualified’s Piper.

Despite this, the initiative was not well-received by the target audience, leading to its cancellation.

I mean I don’t think it was a bad idea…
