OpenAI CTO's $100M fundraiser
+ Midjourney's new editing features

Hippos don’t just sweat—they sweat pink. Turns out, what looks like sweat on a hippo is actually a natural sunscreen that’s pinkish-red. So while they’re out here lounging in the sun, they’ve got built-in SPF.

AI STARTUPS
Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati is raising over $100 million for her new AI startup, which will focus on creating AI products using its own models.
Murati left OpenAI last month, praising the company for advancing how AI systems handle complex problems.
She said she needed time and space to explore her own projects but gave no further details. Sounds like my last break-up.
Before joining OpenAI as VP of applied AI in 2018, she worked at Tesla and Leap Motion.
She’s the boss
She became CTO in 2022 and briefly served as interim CEO during Sam Altman’s short absence.
Her departure follows other top-level exits, including the chief research officer and research VP.
Here’s the summary:
Mira Murati is raising over $100 million for her new AI startup.
The startup will focus on AI products built on proprietary models.
OpenAI raised $6.6 billion in the biggest VC round ever after her departure.

MIDJOURNEY
Midjourney is about to launch a new web tool that lets users edit uploaded images with AI.
This feature, expected early next week, will allow users to change textures and adjust colours and details in images by using captions.
AI image editing has become a hot topic.
Companies like Meta and Google are facing issues with labeling AI-edited images.
Midjourney has started using the IPTC’s Digital Source Type to mark images as AI-generated, but it hasn’t yet adopted C2PA, a system that tracks an image’s entire history, including the software used to create it.
Midjourney plans to limit access to the upgraded tool to a small group of users at first.
It will introduce more human and AI moderation to reduce misuse.
However, there are worries about these tools being used improperly, especially for copyright infringement or spreading fake, misleading images.
Here’s what you should know:
Midjourney’s new tool allows users to edit images by changing textures and colours with AI.
Companies are struggling with how to label AI-edited images versus AI-generated ones.
Midjourney will limit access to the tool and boost moderation to prevent misuse.
A dash of AI approval
Deepfakes are becoming a big problem.
There’s been a 900% rise in deepfake creation this year alone, and they are spreading disinformation.
Recent examples include fake images following Hurricane Helene.
Public concern is high, with 85% of Americans worried about deepfakes.
Despite this, there’s no federal law in the U.S. to regulate them, though some states like California are trying to introduce rules to remove deepfakes and issue penalties.
MidJourney has faced criticism for its AI practices, including lawsuits over using copyrighted material in its AI training.
But recently, the platform has started taking steps to reduce deepfakes, such as adding filters ahead of the U.S. presidential election to stop the misuse of political images.
With that being said, I miss Paint.
