OpenAI are done playing around with side quests
OpenAI is reportedly working on a desktop “superapp” that would combine ChatGPT, its Codex coding tool, and its Atlas browser into one place, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The idea seems to be to make its product lineup easier to manage and less spread out.
In a memo quoted by the WSJ, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, said having too many separate products had been slowing the company down and making it harder to keep quality high.
The report suggests OpenAI is now trying to focus more on the products that are gaining traction, especially as competition from Anthropic grows and Claude Code becomes more popular.
OpenAI made a lot of noise last year with launches like Sora and its deal to buy Jony Ive’s AI hardware company.
In brief:
OpenAI is reportedly bringing ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas into one desktop app.
The goal appears to be cutting overlap and making the product line easier to manage.
The mobile ChatGPT app is reportedly staying the same.
Too many tabs open
But the company now seems to be narrowing its focus.
In a post on X, Simo said companies go through periods of trying new things and periods of tightening up, and that when something starts to work, like Codex, it makes sense to focus on it more and cut back on distractions.
OpenAI spokesperson Lindsey Held declined to comment, and the WSJ said the mobile ChatGPT app is not expected to change.
