OPENAI
One of the UK’s biggest AI projects just stalled
OpenAI has paused its main UK data centre project, Stargate UK, which is a setback for Britain’s plan to build more AI infrastructure at home.
The site was meant to launch in north-east England in early 2026, but the company said high energy costs and unclear regulation made the project harder to move forward.
The project was first announced in September as part of a wider US-UK tech investment plan involving Nvidia and Microsoft.
It was expected to bring hundreds of millions of dollars into one of the UK’s main AI growth areas and support the government’s goal of making Britain a major AI player.
The delay also shows a wider change in OpenAI’s priorities.
Even after raising $122 billion last month, the company has recently pulled back on other big projects too, including part of its Stargate plans in Texas, as it puts more focus on competing with Anthropic and Google.
Here’s what you should know:
Stargate UK is on pause because of high energy costs and policy uncertainty.
The delay is a blow to the UK’s AI plans, especially around building local computing power.
OpenAI is still investing in the region, including through its London team and work with partners like Nscale.

OpenAI also pointed to concerns around UK AI policy.
One issue was the government’s decision to delay changes to copyright rules that would have made it easier for AI companies to train models on protected content.
OpenAI said it is still considering Stargate UK, but only if the conditions become better for long-term investment.
The UK government said it is still working with OpenAI and other AI companies to improve the country’s computing capacity and attract more investment.
OpenAI also said it still plans to grow its presence in London, which is its biggest research hub outside the US.
