NVIDIA

Nvidia is developing new versions of its AI chips for the Chinese market to comply with U.S. export restrictions.

This new chip, part of the “Blackwell” series, is designed to be compatible with current U.S. regulations.

The AI chip giant revealed the “Blackwell” chips series in March, with mass production set for later this year.

The B200 chip, a standout in the series, is 30 times faster than its predecessor for tasks like chatbot responses.

Nvidia will collaborate with Inspur, a major distributor in China, to launch and distribute the new chip, tentatively named the “B20”.

What you should know:

  • The “Blackwell” series features the B200 chip, which is 30 times faster than its predecessor for tasks like chatbot responses.

  • Nvidia is collaborating with Inspur, a major distributor in China, to launch and distribute the new chip, tentatively named “B20”.

  • Nvidia has developed three China-specific chips since the U.S. tightened export controls in 2023 to prevent advances in Chinese supercomputing.

Sneaky or smart?

According to Reuters, the sources of this information prefer to remain anonymous, as Nvidia has not made a public announcement.

Since the U.S. tightened its controls on exports of advanced semiconductors to China in 2023, Nvidia has tailored three chips for the Chinese market.

This move aimed to prevent China from making any steps in supercomputing that could bolster its military capabilities.

The tighter controls have opened opportunities for Chinese companies like Huawei and startups such as Enflame to gain ground in the domestic AI processor market.

A chip from Nvidia’s Blackwell series specifically for the Chinese market could support Nvidia’s position against these local competitors.

Due to U.S. sanctions, China’s contribution to Nvidia’s revenue dropped from 26% to 17% over two years.

Nvidia’s most advanced chip from China, the H20, initially had a slow start when it began deliveries this year.

However, sales are now growing rapidly, with estimates suggesting Nvidia will sell over 1 million H20 chips in China this year, worth upwards of $12 billion.

The U.S. is expected to maintain pressure on semiconductor-related export controls.

The Biden administration has preliminary plans to impose restrictions on the most advanced AI models, the core software of AI systems like ChatGPT.

Global chip stocks dropped last week after news surfaced that the US is considering a rule to block products made with American technology from being sold to China.

Nvidia caught red-handed?

Do you think Nvidia’s new chip strategy will outsmart U.S. export controls?

Leaders in AI

Raquel Urtasun

After serving as the chief scientist at Uber’s self-driving unit, Raquel Urtasun founded the autonomous trucking start-up Waabi in 2021, capitalising on the lessons from earlier industry challenges.

Urtasun leverages a “second mover” advantage, using recent AI developments to train Waabi’s driverless trucks within a virtual simulation, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs while avoiding real-world risks.

This innovative approach has transformed Waabi and enabled it to secure $83 million in venture capital and move towards licensing its technology for long-haul trucking.

Urtasun’s leadership is particularly notable in the male-dominated AI field, where she uses her resilience and determination as driving forces behind her success, embodying the role of a trailblazer in both technology and diversity.

GOOGLE

Users of Google’s URL shortening service goo.gl, which shut down in 2019, have now been told that these links will stop working entirely on August 25th, 2025.

Google announced that all goo.gl links will show a 404 error from this date, potentially causing millions of links to go dead overnight.

What you should know:

  • Goo.gl links will show a warning from August 23rd, 2024.

  • All goo.gl links will stop working on August 25th, 2025.

  • Potentially millions of links will be affected.

Poof, gone!

It will look like this

Starting August 23rd, 2024, goo.gl links will display a warning page.

This message will appear for some links at first, but more links will show it as the deadline gets closer.

Google suggests updating affected links quickly to avoid any issues.

It’s the link-pocalypse folks.
