📰 NEWS OUTLETS MAKE AI DEMANDS
Several giant media organisations have called for rules protecting copyright in data used to train generative AI models, in the form of an open letter.
Signatories of the letter include Agence France-Presse, the European Pressphoto Agency, the European Publishers’ Council, Gannett, Getty Images, the National Press Photographers Association, the National Writers Union, News Media Alliance, The Associated Press, and The Authors Guild. That was a mouthful.
An open letter urged lawmakers around the globe to consider regulations that require transparency into training datasets and the consent of rights holders before using data for training.
They also request allowing media companies to negotiate with AI model operators, identifying AI-generated content, and mandating AI companies eliminate bias and misinformation in their services.
Supposedly, Google has shown off their news-generating AI to the Wall Street Journal and it’s causing news organisations to panic that their business is in deep trouble, hence the letter.

🏃♂️ AMAZON RACING TO CATCH UP ON AI
Amazon is well and truly in the AI arms race. They are racing to catch up with AI leaders like OpenAI and Google, but they might just have a secret weapon.
They’ve designed two new microchips from scratch that are designed for generative AI. These custom chips, named Inferentia and Trainium, offer AWS customers an alternative to training their large language models on Nvidia GPUs, which have been getting difficult and expensive to procure.
Amazon have moved much slower than other companies on AI, and it seems like they’re now playing catch up.
Amazon’s AI strategy
It wasn’t until April that Amazon announced its own family of large language models, called Titan, along with a service called Bedrock to help developers enhance software using generative AI - far later than Google, Microsoft and Meta acted.
Market analyst Chirag Dekate from Gartner said:
“Amazon is not used to chasing markets. Amazon is used to creating markets. And I think for the first time in a long time, they are finding themselves on the back foot and they are working to play catch up.”
