NASA just hired an AI doctor for space
NASA and Google are testing an AI medical assistant to help astronauts handle health issues on deep-space missions, where real-time calls to Earth won’t be an option.
The Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA) runs on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI and works with speech, text, and images.
It’s been trialled for ankle injury, flank pain, and ear pain, scoring 88%, 74%, and 80% accuracy.
Key points:
AI tool aims to make space medical care more Earth-independent.
Tested with up to 88% accuracy in early trials.
Potential future use in remote or resource-limited areas.
Clinic in the cloud
NASA plans to add more medical data and better understand space-specific challenges like microgravity.
While Google hasn’t confirmed Earth-based use, the tech could help in remote healthcare settings.
