Musk vs. Altman is peak CEO drama

AI TECH
OpenAI has joined Oracle, Japan’s SoftBank, and the UAE’s MGX to launch The Stargate Project.
This $500 billion (£405bn) plan will build AI infrastructure in the United States.
President Trump called it the “largest AI infrastructure project in history” and said it would boost the US’s leadership in technology and AI.
The project already has $100 billion in funding and aims to create 100,000 jobs over four years.
Construction has started on the first data centre in Texas, with more planned across the US. Partners include Nvidia, Arm, Microsoft, and Oracle.
Elon Musk, who often criticises OpenAI, claimed the project doesn’t have the money it promises, saying SoftBank has secured less than $10 billion.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman denied this and invited Musk to visit the Texas site.
Musk’s criticism may stem from his ongoing disputes with Altman and his competing AI ventures.
The Stargate Project is part of a larger boom in AI investment:
Microsoft plans to spend $80 billion on AI data centres in 2025.
Amazon has committed $20 billion to two data centre projects in recent months.
McKinsey estimates global data centre capacity needs to triple by 2030, growing 19-27% per year.
Stargate: Sci-Fi name, real money
The rapid rise of AI data centres raises concerns about their energy use, land requirements, and foreign involvement.
These issues could slow progress without better solutions.
US policies are being introduced to manage these challenges, such as limiting AI chip exports and promoting clean energy to power data centres.
Despite the hurdles, the Stargate Project highlights the need for major investment to keep up with AI’s rapid expansion.
Texas is about to be the data hub.
