AI STARTUPS
Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI, has announced Thinking Machines Lab, a new AI startup focused on making AI more customisable and easier to understand.
The company, now out of stealth, is led by Murati as CEO, with OpenAI co-founder John Schulman as chief scientist and Barret Zoph as CTO.
Thinking Machines Lab aims to develop multimodal AI that works alongside people across different fields, including science and programming.
The goal is to make AI systems more adaptable and accessible, moving beyond the control of just a few major research labs.
The company is putting AI safety at the core of its mission by:
Preventing model misuse.
Sharing best practices for safe AI development.
Supporting external research by making code, datasets, and model details publicly available.
Murati’s era
Murati, who played a key role in developing ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex at OpenAI, left the company in October 2023.
Since then, reports have suggested she has been assembling a team of top AI researchers from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Character AI.
In brief:
Thinking Machines Lab is focused on making AI more user-friendly and adaptable.
AI safety and transparency will be central to its work.
The company is actively hiring for machine learning and engineering roles.
Murati joins a wave of ex-OpenAI executives launching AI startups, alongside Anthropic and Ilya Sutskever’s Safe Superintelligence.
Murati’s building an AI Avengers team, and we’re all here for it.
