Pinterest is making its visual search smarter.
The feature that lets you search using an image, instead of typing out keywords, is getting a few hands-on updates to help you find styles, aesthetics, or ideas that are tricky to describe.
One new tool, rolling out in the women’s fashion category in the U.S., U.K., and Canada, uses Gen AI to show why a particular Pin stands out.
When you tap a Pin, it glows briefly and then suggests keywords based on what you might like about it.
It’s powered by Visual Language Models, a type of AI that can recognise imagery.
Quick facts:
New AI tools suggest keywords based on your Pin preferences.
Easier ways to find alternatives in different styles or materials.
AI-generated content will be labelled and easier to filter.
You can tweak your searches more easily, like finding a similar item in a different colour, fabric, or with a more formal feel.
Visual search won’t be limited to the search bar anymore; you can now long-press on any pin in your home feed to start a search from there.
These changes have come as Pinterest has begun labelling AI-generated images and letting users limit how often they see them, after complaints that AI content was crowding out our real photos.
With these updates, Pinterest is trying to strike a balance: using AI to help people shop and get inspired, without letting it take over completely.
This is why Pinterest still eats every time.
